CAMPS

Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA is a place to that strives to allow kids to have fun, enjoy themselves, feel good about who they are and what they are doing and ultimately enjoy the experience of being a kid...some of our volunteers also enjoy the chance to be a kid again too.

All of this happens on camp...it’s how the organisation was founded and remains at the core of what we strive to achieve and the programmes that we offer. When you walk into a Edmund Rice Camp, you are overwhelmed by the sense of joy, laughter, big smiles and atmosphere of happiness that exist in this special place.

In 2006, we saw the consolidation of our existing camps programme, as well as the launch and expansion of new camp structures. During the past year, there has been an endeavour to offer more camps to more kids, more often.

In July 2006, Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA ran a younger kids (8-12yrs) and middle kids (13-14yrs) camp through the school holidays at Camp Kelly in Dwellingup. The participants attended the camps which aimed at providing them with the opportunity to have a holiday experience in a fun, active and encouraging environment. Activities included: Skit nights, scavenger hunts, quiz nights, bush walking, cooking and sports.

For the first time the Older Kids Camp (15-16yrs) was moved from the July school holidays to the October holidays at Camp Kelly in Dwellingup. This coincided with the launch of the mini camps programme for older boys and older girls which were ran early in the year.

January 2007 was once again a very busy time with four camps held at Tuppin House in Moore River. The children again were from 8-16 years. In total over 100 children were offered a place on camp in January with 41 of these children being new referrals and had not attended an Edmund Rice Camp before. As these camps were held during the summer months, many of the activities on camp were focused around the beach and rivers edge.

Camps are the largest programme run by Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA and continues to be the most funded, resourced and well attended programme, working with the most number of West Australian kids and families. However, camps would not be able to run without the enormous support and dedication of the hundreds of volunteers that give of their time to come on camp and encourage the kids to have fun.

Throughout the past year, on camps from July 2006 through to January 2007 as well as a number of new Mini Camps, there was over 120 volunteers who committed themselves to helping run and support an Edmund Rice Camps. These include young adult volunteer leaders working closely with kids on camp; volunteer bus drivers without whom we could not make it to camp, volunteer cooks and kitchen-hands who have an unglamorous job, but ensure that everyone on camp is well fed, and a variety of other roles including camp coaches and managers.

Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA has and will continue to be a volunteer based and run organisation and we thank all those volunteers, in whatever role they take on, who continue to bring joy to the lives of hundreds of kids and their families in the West Australian community.

The cost of camps is covered predominately by Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA at a cost of around $260 per child. The families make a small contribution to send their child on camp.

As we begin a new year in Edmund Rice Camps for Kids WA, we look forward with excitement to the fun and adventure to be had on camps in 2007. Along with more Mini Camps there will also be another camp for the Younger Kids group run through the April School holidays. This will mean that ERCKWA is now running camps for kids in need during every school holiday period.
